Workforce Retention

At a time when there is a critical shortage of people entering the field of long-term care, the national front line staff turnover rate of 50% further intensifies the strain that our organizations are feeling. However, through the development of successful strategies to retain existing staff and attract new staff, we can combat current needs and safeguard the future.

There are multiple factors impacting these shortages. 69% of prospective employees reject job offers because they discover that workers in the organization are unhappy. Front line staff consistently report that supportive leadership and a positive working environment are two important components in selecting an employer and deciding to remain over a longer period of time. It is imperative to ground organizational cultures in a set of values, skills and actions that will attract and retain quality staff. The age-old belief that turnover is an expected and unavoidable reality is an assumption, one that will impede an organization’s ability to employ and retain quality staff.

Copernicus has designed an assessment process to assist facilities in identifying the obstacles that impede successful workforce retention. We provide practices to help implement actionable strategies to address the issues. Initially, we conduct group forums with both leadership and staff which determine key problems that create obstacles for successful organizational relationships and communication. A data driven report is developed to reflect common themes which emerge from these group discussions. Recommendations include a suggested plan of action to solve the identified issues.
